A notification is different from a new window
Microsoft’s current Edge guidance says website notifications can appear in the desktop notification area even when Edge is closed. It distinguishes those alerts from pop-ups that open in a browser window or tab. Closing a window therefore does not necessarily remove a website’s permission to send notifications. [1]
Permission is not an endorsement
In a July 2023 account, Microsoft documented sites disguising notification permission requests as a way to prove the visitor was human. Once allowed, a site could send misleading warnings styled like system errors. This is a documented abuse pattern, not evidence that any particular alert on your computer is malicious. [2]
Block the website’s notification permission
Microsoft’s support page directs Edge users to Settings, then Privacy, search, and services, Site permissions and All sites. Select the unwanted website and set Notifications to Block. These are the labels in the reviewed support page; managed devices or other versions may differ. A pop-up blocker controls a different mechanism. [1]

What this action does—and does not show
Our interpretation: Removing a sender’s notification permission addresses that channel. It does not prove that the computer has been scanned, that an account is secure, or that an earlier payment can be recovered. Treat the message’s delivery mechanism and any separate incident as separate questions.
A familiar-looking box
Hypothetical example: A desktop alert appears after you finish browsing and claims that a subscription needs renewal. Before treating its appearance as proof of a system diagnosis, identify the sending website. The place where a message appears is not the same as the authority behind its claim.
